A cruise through Ha Long Bay ranks among the world's great travel experiences. Here is everything you need to know to choose wisely and enjoy every moment.

Choosing Your Cruise

Boats range from budget day-trippers to ultra-luxurious floating hotels. We strongly recommend a minimum of two nights to fully explore the bay. Mid-range cruises in the $150–300 per-person bracket offer the best value: comfortable private cabins, quality food, and a solid activity programme.

Budget vs Mid-Range vs Luxury

  • Budget ($50–100/night): Basic cabins, limited activities, crowded areas of the bay.
  • Mid-range ($150–250/night): Comfortable cabins, excellent food, kayaking, cave visits. Recommended.
  • Luxury ($300–600+/night): Boutique-style vessels, fine dining, private balconies, exclusive itineraries.

What to Pack

Light, quick-dry clothing, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a light rain jacket, insect repellent, sea-sickness tablets (just in case), a dry bag for electronics, and a good camera. Leave heavy luggage at your Hanoi hotel.

Best Time to Go

October to April is ideal: cool, clear skies and calm seas. Summer (July–August) brings warmer water but occasional rain and heavier boat traffic. Avoid the bay during major Vietnamese holidays when it becomes very crowded.
